Rich User Interfaces

In many ways, the web revolution was a giant step backward. The earliest web applications were ugly and clunky compared to the native desktop applications most of us were accustomed to using. All the little things we had taken for granted - hover-over help text, drag and drop, fine-grained control over position and format of widgets - were suddenly not there. Users, understandably, couldn't understand why couldn't have all the nice features they had grown fond of in all those Powerbuilder apps we rolled out in the 1990's.

Fast-forward to 2011. All that has changed. Advances in HTML and CSS help us build applications that look fantastic. AJAX and JavaScript libraries like jQuery and Prototype make it a snap to build responsive, engaging user interfaces. Still not enough? No problem. Newer technologies like Adobe Flex and Microsoft Silverlight let us build great-looking, intuitive, easy-to-use, cross-browser and cross-platform applications that beat the socks off those old Powerbuilder applications we used to be so fond of.

The good news is that many of the old limitations of web applications are no more. The bad news is that it's difficult to stay on top of these advances if your development teams spend their time maintaining Web 1.0 applications built years ago that don't incorporate these new technologies.
